TROY TWP., Pa. (EYT) — The remains of a man found in Crawford County in September have been identified as a Seneca man who went missing in June of 2017.

Corry-based State Police say the remains have been identified as William J. Ward.

Ward’s remains were found in a wooded area off Steadman Road, in Troy Township, Crawford County, around 4:30 p.m. on September 29.

State police were assisted at the scene by the Mercyhurst University forensic anthropology department. The remains were analyzed and compared to a DNA sample collected from one of Ward’s parents, and they matched.

According to police, on June 29, 2017, 33-year-old William J. Ward, of Seneca, was reported missing by his mother and girlfriend.

Police say during the afternoon hours of June 28, 2017, Ward was in the area of Steadman Road, Troy Township, Crawford County. He reportedly contacted numerous acquaintances via a cell phone attempting to arrange a ride and transportation from the Walmart in Titusville. He was last seen walking east on State Route 408 towards Hydetown Borough, Crawford County.

According to police, Ward’s vehicle, a late model dark-colored Dodge Durango, was located on Steadman Road. Search efforts conducted by the state police, volunteers, and Ward’s family produced limited results. Information derived from the investigation revealed Ward never arrived at Walmart.

Police note Ward had an existing medical condition and was without his medications at the time he went missing.

The circumstances surrounding Ward’s disappearance are still under investigation by state police and the Crawford County Coroner’s Office; however, state police say there is no evidence of foul play.
