10th Annual Oil Region Indie Music Festival to be Held June 9-10 in Downtown Oil City

| June 5, 2017

OIL CITY, Pa. – Independent musicians will be the spotlight once again, as the Oil Region Indie Music Festival celebrates its 10th anniversary Friday, June 9, and Saturday, June 10, in Oil City.

The festival will return to its Friday night format on a closed block of Seneca Street, and Saturday’s events will focus on Town Square park.

“We are happy to be headed back to Seneca Street for the first night of the 10th annual Oil Region Indie Music Festival. Over the years, it has provided a great space to celebrate original music,” said Jerome Wincek, festival founder and planning committee member.

As was done last year, Friday’s music will run from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with outdoor stages only. Those will be Seneca Street, Pipeline Alley, and Venango Museum.

“In 2016, we turned our focus to the outside performance spaces. It was successful and a more manageable task for our small budget and limited number of volunteers,” said Joann Wheeler, a 10-year planning committee member.

That wasn’t the only lesson learned. The Town Square park and Seneca plaza debuted as indie fest performance spaces last year. Both spots worked out well, so Saturday’s concerts will be held at those locations.

“Since we reintroduced Saturdays to the Indie Fest schedule, we have been searching for the best place to have music,” said Jill Harry, planning committee member. “We think the park and the nearby plaza fit the bill.”

In Town Square, the music will run from 2:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Performances in the plaza will start at 3:15 p.m., also ending at 9:00 p.m.

Music on both days will vary from singer-songwriter, folk, metal core, New Age, Indie rock and alternative. Friday night will also feature several youth musicians at the Venango Museum performance area. A complete schedule is available at the Oil Region Indie Music Festival Facebook page.

In case of inclement weather, concerts will be held as scheduled but moved inside the National Transit Building and the Venango Museum.

Along with more than 30 musical acts, the festival will also feature a street fair each day with a variety of vendors, food concessions, and children’s activities. The event is sponsored by the Oil City Arts and Culture Commission.

Art receptions will be held on Friday evening at the Graffiti Gallery and the Art Inside location, both on Seneca Street. Other Northside Oil City businesses will also be hosting concerts and other events to concede with the festival.

“Last year we asked business owners and managers to book their own entertainment, and many of them did. It is exciting to see them doing it again this year,” Wincek said.

“One of the reasons we started this festival was to give independent artists a place to perform their original music,” he said. “The Oil Region Indie Music Festival has established itself to do just that. For businesses to expand on it by offering additional opportunities to artists, we see that as a win for everyone.”
