CRAWFORD COUNTY, Pa. (EYT) — According to sources, a Youngstown State University student was buried alive by her two Cochranton area attackers.

Sources say 18-year-old Jade N. Olmstead and Ashley M. Barber invited 20-year-old Brandy Stevens to their Cochranton-area home on May 17, 2012, savagely beat and choked her, then buried her alive in a grave they prepared.

According to police, the suspects confessed to luring Stevens to the wooded area where they dug the shallow grave; then they repeatedly beat her with a shovel and used a rope in an attempt to strangle her.

Police say the women admitted that the victim was still alive when they placed her in the grave, so they grabbed a large rock and threw it on her face, then poured water in her mouth and nose saying they saw it gurgle and then it stopped.

According to the coroner report, there was evidence of suffocation and brown liquid in her nasal passages — the victim did not die from the rope around her neck, but suffocated from the dirt that entered her system.

Documents indicated the autopsy showed Stevens had blunt force trauma to the head, 15 lacerations to her scalp, a skull fracture and a rope around her neck.

Both will stand trial on charges of homicide, conspiracy to commit homicide, and an evidence tampering charge — they burned some of the victim’s belongings as well as some of their own clothes that they bloodied during the killing.

Barber and Olmstead are currently housed at the Crawford County Correctional Facility in Saegertown, Pa.

They will be arraigned in Crawford County Court on Aug. 24.
