2017 Halloween Guide for Venango County and Surrounding Areas Brought to You By Farmers National Bank

| October 30, 2017

A look at this year’s Halloween festivities and trick-or-treat schedule for Venango County and surrounding areas.

While the holiday has evolved over the years, Halloween continues to be a big draw for millions of U.S. children, drumming up business for industries like candy distributors and movie theaters. The following are some spooktacular facts and figures provided by the U.S. Census Bureau.

Trick or Treat

41.1 million: The estimated number of potential trick-or-treaters in 2015 — children ages 5 to 14 — across the U.S.

Chocolate Treats

37,128: The number of people employed by U.S. manufacturing establishments that produced chocolate and cocoa products in 2014. This industry’s value of shipments totaled $16.0 billion, up from $15.2 billion in 2013.

Spooky Movies

4,449: The number of motion picture theaters (except drive-ins) in the U.S. in 2014 where one could see a horror movie. California (511), Texas (326), New York (265) and Florida (195) had the most movie theaters. There were 219 drive-in motion picture theaters in 2014 — Ohio had 23, and California and Pennsylvania each had 19 drive-in motion picture theaters.

Pick a Pumpkin

40,900: The number of acres of pumpkins harvested in the U.S. in 2015, with a total estimated production value of $90.2 million. Of the top six pumpkin-producing states, Illinois led the country by producing an estimated 318.0 million pounds, followed by California, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan and New York.

However, along with fun holiday activities, the scare season also brings some dangers that can create harmful situations for families and their property.

Protect your children

Halloween allows children to explore their imagination and splurge on savory treats, but along with the fun comes some haunting hazards. The following tips will help combat impending dangers:

  • Provide children with safe and comfortable costumes
  • What precautions should be taken during trick-or-treating
  • Child safe home decorations

Protect your property

Halloween also brings a season of trickery, and data shows that property may be more at risk during the week of Halloween. Statistics taken from Nationwide claims over the last five years show that the rate of property damage caused by vandalism or malicious mischief increased by more than 8 percent during the week of Halloween, and that auto theft occurs at a 6 percent higher rate.

Protect your pets

Pets are part of the family, and Halloween exposes them to more toxins and hazards than at any other time of the year. Make sure to keep candy, small costume parts and lit candles out of pets’ reach.
