FRANKLIN, Pa. (EYT) – Sugarcreek Borough Police learned of a threat made by a Rocky Grove High School student toward other students and staff members through social media. The student was taken into custody early Wednesday.

According to Police Chief Matt Carlson, his department learned of the threat around 9:45 p.m. on Tuesday.

“Tuesday at about 8:30 a.m., the student made statements to other students and staff that he was going to commit a crime of violence with a gun at the school Wednesday,” Carlson said. “When we found out about the threat that evening, we located him, arrested him, and placed him where his movements were limited.”

“It caused quite an uproar on social media Tuesday night,” Carlson said. “Parents weren’t going to let their kids come to school.”

Rocky Grove School Superintendent Kevin Briggs said he wasn’t at the school on Tuesday when the threats were made.

“The comments that were made were concerning, and we made an internal investigation,” Briggs said. “I spoke with police Tuesday night. There was a lot of stuff on social media that wasn’t true, but we feel the situation has been resolved.”

Carlson said the investigation is nearly complete, and charges are expected to be filed soon in juvenile court.

Carlson said the school was not closed due to the incident.
