CRAWFORD COUNTY, Pa. — Sources say a fisherman was rescued yesterday after falling in the water at French Creek between Meadville and Vernon Township.

According to a published article in the Meadville Tribune, around 12:50 p.m. on April 18, 21-year-old Jeff DeMatteo slipped in the estimated 50-degree water at French Creek while attempting to retrieve a fishing lure.

Although the water in French Creek was at about 5.75 feet, the water was flowing swiftly, sources say.

DeMatteo, who ventured into the stream without a life vest, was helped out of the creek by two other anglers who were fishing with him along the west bank of the creek, according to sources.

Meadville Fire Department’s rescue vehicle and Meadville Area Ambulance Service were dispatched to the scene.

DeMatteo was taken to Meadville Medical Center for evaluation and was released after treatment, according to sources.
