Meadville
HERSHEY, Pa. (EYT) – In what could easily be looked at as a David vs. Goliath matchup, Goliath proved to be too much for Meadville Friday night in the PIAA Class 5A basketball championship game.

Archbishop Wood, the District 12 champion and Philadelphia Catholic League champs, raced out to a 17-2 lead and never looked back on their way to a 73-40 win over the District 10 champion Bulldogs.

The Vikings (28-3) didn’t particularly shoot the ball well in the opening minutes of the game connecting on just 6 of 18 shots but it didn’t matter since Meadville (26-2) missed its first 10 shots and shot 6 of 22 in the first half and 13 of 59 in the game.

Up 17-5 after a quarter, Archbishop Wood didn’t let up in the second quarter outscoring Meadville 23-16 to take a 40-21 halftime lead with Tyree Pickron scoring 14 of his game-high 18 points before the half.

Any thoughts of a second-half rally by the Bulldogs were put the rest in the opening minute or so of the second half when the Vikings scored the first six points of the half to push the lead to 25, 46-21.

The lead grew to 29, 58-29, by the end of the third quarter.

Collin Gillespie, a Villanova recruit, added 15 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists for the Vikings, who also got 11 points and 11 rebounds from Seth Pinkney and 10 tallies from Andrew Funk.

Armoni Foster led Meadville with 17 points, Simeal Wofford added 14 and Lashon Lindsey had nine. They were the only three Bulldogs to score.

Archbishop Wood’s bench outscored Meadville 20-0, the Vikings had 14 points off turnovers to five for Meadville and 16 second-chance points to the Bulldogs 10.
