Bird LeRoy Sommerville

Bird LeRoy Sommerville peacefully went to God on January 5, 2018.

Bird was born June 9, 1941. His parents, Lloyd L. Sommerville and Joan Buzard Sommerville preceded him in death. Also preceding him were his maternal grandparents, Ed L. and Rose Buzard; paternal grandparents, Chester and Rosa Sommerville; and brother-in-law, Gorden E. Flick.

Bird graduated from Johnstown Career and Training Center in 1961. His major employers were Howard Johnson Restaurant in Brookville and Clarion University. He retired from ShippenBill in 2010. Bird gained great satisfaction from volunteer work. Clarion Chamber of Commerce named him Volunteer of the Year. He enjoyed the many accolades he received from the national and state government representatives, greetings from friends, and being a featured volunteer at the A.L.F. parade.

Bird is survived by his sisters, Cheri Flick, of Houston, TX, and Barbara Stewart and brother-in-law, Sherwood Stewart, of Clarion; niece Michele Stewart Nafziger; nephews Ed L. Stewart, Jeffrey and Steve Flick.

Bird was loved by six grand-nieces, Erin, Maggie, Kaitlin, Penn, Siri, and Camus; five grand-nephews, Stewart, William, Jacob, Gordon Val; special cousins, Mona Jane, Bill, Ted, and Lois; and devoted others.

Bird enjoyed the loving friendship of Kerry Kifer, Rev. David Selleck, Pam and Tom Wensel, Rev. Jonathan Scanlon, his church family, workplace and town friends, and his many new friends at Clarview Nursing Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Bird’s honor to the First Presbyterian Church of Clarion, 700 Wood Street, Clarion, PA 16214 (www.clarionfirstpresby.org), the Clarion County YMCA, 15952 Rt. 322 #1, Clarion PA 16214 (www.clarioncountyymca.org), or the Strattanville Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 93, Strattanville, PA 16258.

Arrangements are under the care of the Goble Funeral Home and Crematory, 330 Wood Street in Clarion. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 9, at 11:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 700 Wood Street in Clarion to remember and honor Bird. All are welcome.
