Bitter Wind Chill Could Make Air in Venango County Feel Like -30 Degrees

VENANGO CO., Pa. (EYT) — The raging blast of cold air that has hit Venango County could make it feel like it is 30 below.

The National Weather Service of Pittsburgh reinforced its Urgent Winter Weather Message early this morning warning individuals in Venango County and surrounding areas of a wind chill warning that is expected to run through Friday morning at 7:00 a.m.

The combination of very cold air and the wind could create dangerously low wind chill values as low as 30 below. It is advised to stay indoors during the worst part of the extreme cold.

The cold wind chills could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 15 minutes.

Individuals who are traveling or plan to be outdoors are advised that wet surfaces will be quick to freeze.

Today will be mostly cloudy and cold with a high of 6 degrees with wind chill values as low as -26 degrees. It will be breezy with a west wind of up to 20 mph in the afternoon, and winds could gust as high as 32 mph.

There won’t be much of an accumulation of snow today with less than a half inch possible.

The temperature will drop tonight to around -10 tonight with wind chill values as low as -30. Winds of 9 to 11 mph are coming out of the west with gusts as high as 23 mph.

Due to the severity of the winter storm and high winds, PennDOT has temporarily reduced the speed limit on Interstate 80 from the Ohio state line to Exit 97 (DuBois).

PennDOT is urging motorists to avoid unnecessary travel. If you must travel, it is recommended to have a winter survival kit in your vehicle.

The plunging temperatures create a danger for those who are outdoors. Frostbite can occur quickly and even hypothermia or death if precautions are not taken.

The wind chill warning continues into Thursday. It will be mostly sunny and cold with a high of near 6 degrees. Nevertheless, the wind chill values are expected to be as low as -26. A west wind of 8 to 13 mph is anticipated. There is a slight chance of snow late Thursday night. It will be mostly cloudy with a low around -4. The wind chill values are expected to be as low as -14. The winds coming out of the will become calm, traveling approximately 5 to 7 mph.

The weather is on the upswing on Friday with the temperature reaching a high of near 20 degrees. There is a chance of snow throughout the day.

Friday night will be mostly cloudy with a low around 9.

The temperature will still be on the rise on Saturday with a high near 34. It will be mostly sunny during the day. The area will see a low of around 27 on Saturday night.

The high on Sunday will near 44 with a slight chance of rain after noon. The temperature will also drop to 35 on Sunday night with a chance o rain.

The temperature will continue to rise on Monday with a chance of a high near 50 and a low of around 36 in the evening. There is also a slight chance of rain on Monday.
