SHIPPENVILLE, Pa. (EYT) – State police in Clarion have released the identity of the woman who was seriously injured in a fire in Shippenville last night.

Emergency crews from Shippenville and Knox responded to a fire at a residence at Forest Park Estates along Route 322 in Shippenville around 8:00 p.m.

Police say a resident of the home, 52-year-old Wendy Walters, sustained serious injuries in the fire, including smoke inhalation and burns to her face, arms, and hands.

She sustained these injuries while she was attempting to fight the fire prior to emergency personnel arriving on the scene, police say.

According to police, the smoke began to overcome Walters, at which point she exited the residence by breaking a kitchen window and crawling through it.

Walters sustained additional injuries when she cut herself on broken glass while crawling through the window.

Officials say a landing zone was setup at the Paint Township Building for STAT MedEvac to transport Walters to an undisclosed hospital. Shippenville Ambulance transported her from the scene to the landing zone.

There is no word on her current condition.

No other injuries were reported.

It was originally believed the fire may have been caused by an explosion. Shippenville-Elk Fire Chief Jeremy Hallberg says the fire marshal ruled that out and will classify the fire as accidental.

“The gas company checked all lines and found no leaks or faulty equipment,” said Hallberg.

Authorities now believe the fire may have been caused by a candle, but say the investigation is ongoing.

Clarion Fire & Hose No 1 assisted with setting up the helicopter landing zone.

Washington Township and Pinegrove Volunteer Fire Departments were on standby.
