Erie Diocese Receives Subpoena as U.S. Justice Department Opens Clergy Abuse Probe in Pennsylvania

| October 19, 2018

ERIE, Pa. (EYT) – The Diocese of Erie has confirmed receiving a subpoena from the United States Department of Justice concerning the allegations of child sexual abuse inside the Roman Catholic Church in Pennsylvania.

“The Diocese of Erie confirms it has received a subpoena,” said Mary Solberg, Associate Director of Communications for the Diocese of Erie. “Its counsel is in conversation with the Department of Justice.”

The federal investigation follows the state grand jury report released this summer that found that 301 “predator priests” in six dioceses in Pennsylvania had allegedly molested more than 1,000 children over seven decades and that church leadership had covered up the abuse.
