MARIENVILLE, Pa. (EYT) – An inmate at a Marienville prison is accused of murdering a fellow inmate early this morning.

According to Marienville-based state police, the incident happened around 1:40 a.m. today in a cell at SCI Forest when 26-year-old Elwood Braswell allegedly struck 63-year-old Frederick Kirkland repeatedly with a closed fist. Police said Kirkland fell to the floor and Braswell proceeded to step on the victim’s head. Braswell then allegedly placed a pillow on the victim’s face and sat on the pillow until the victim stopped moving. He allegedly proceeded to tie one end of a bed sheet around the victim’s neck and secured the sheet to the top of the bunk bed frame and then picked up the victim and dropped him in effort to get the victim to stop breathing. Braswell then allegedly placed bars of soap into a sock and struck the victim in the head multiple times. Police said Braswell then proceeded to urinate and defecate on the victim.

Kirkland was found deceased at approximately 5:25 a.m. when corrections officers and prison medical personnel were distributing prescription medications.

Braswell was arraigned on charges of Criminal Homicide, Aggravated Assault, Aggravated Harassment by Prisoner, and Abuse of a Corpse.

Bail was denied.
