HIGHLAND TWP., Pa. (EYT) — A family of campers who went on a trail ride and didn’t return on Wednesday was found safe Thursday morning in Highland Township, Clarion County.

Ray Smith, owner of Cook Forest Scenic Trailride, Dude Ranch & Campground said a family of six, including four adults, one child, and one infant, left for a trail ride between 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

When the family hadn’t returned by 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Smith and others from the campground began searching for them. However, once night fell, they called off the search until morning, when they contacted to Clarion-based State Police to bring in additional resources.

According to Tyler Lencer, First Assistant Chief of Farmington Township Volunteer Fire Company, the family was found safe shortly after the search began, and none of the family members were injured.

Marienville Volunteer Fire Company, Millcreek Township Volunteer Fire Department, Clarion Fire & Hose Company, Clarion-based State Police, and Clarion Hospital Ambulance were also dispatched to aid in the search.

Smith said that once the family found themselves lost with night approaching, they “ducked into the side of a hill” and used horse blankets to cover up for the night.

“We were praying for them all night,” Smith said.

Those prayers were answered, and the family is now back at their campsite, safe and unharmed.
