Oil City Names Ragon Interim Police Chief

| March 1, 2019

OIL CITY, Pa. (EYT) – Dave Ragon was officially named interim Chief of Police for the Oil City Police Department on Thursday evening.

The Oil City Council unanimously voted to approve Ragon’s appointment as interim chief effective immediately.

Ragon, who previously served as a Senior Patrolman, was offered the position on Tuesday and accepted.

He will serve a six-month probationary period. After that, it is expected that the interim tag will be removed.

City Manager Mark Schroyer said a total of seven candidates from within the department were interviewed.

Ragon will replace Bob Wenner who is retiring from his position in Oil City to take on a new position as Chief of Police for the Sugarcreek Borough Police Department.

Wenner’s last day is March 1.

Ragon told exploreVenango.com, “We’ll carry on what we’ve been doing, have the guys keep going after the drug dealers, and work with the people to get the city back up and running again.”

The transition is expected to be a smooth one, as Ragon has been actively working with Chief Wenner on many drug busts as well as investigating a number of domestic incidents and other crimes in Oil City.

Ragon says he is looking forward to taking on a new role and continuing the work the department does for the community.

A 24 year veteran with Oil City Police Department, having begun there in 1995, Ragon has also served as a certified School Resource Officer in the Oil City School District as well as six other districts, conducting classes in areas such as safety, highway safety, and the D.A.R.E. Program.

During his tenure in Oil City, he has supervised shifts and special details on a regular basis and has also served as Oil City’s Supervising Safety Investigator and the First Vice President of the Fraternal Order of Police – Lodge 50.

He is also active in the community, attending local events such as the Firemans 5K.
