NASHVILLE – Patric Hornqvist banked a puck off the back of Pekka Rinne with 1:35 to play, and Carl Hagelin added an empty-net goal with 13.6 seconds left to give the Pittsburgh Penguins their second consecutive Stanley Cup with a 2-0 win over the Nashville Predators in Game 6 at Bridgestone Arena Sunday.

In game that saw Matt Murray make 27 saves for his second straight shutout, neither team was able to score until the waning moments when Hornqvist, who used to play for the Predators, was able to swat a bouncing puck out of the air off a shot by Justin Schultz off the back of Rinni and into the net. Nashville challenged the play claiming goalie interference, but the goal was upheld.

The Penguins killed off four Nashville power players, including a third-period 5-on-3 that lasted for 32 seconds midway through the third period.

The Predators had an apparent goal early in the second period by Colton Sissons waved off when the referee lost sight of the puck and blew the whistle before Sissons punched the puck into a partially empty net.

For the second straight year, Sidney Crosby was named the Conn Smythe Award winner

The Penguins, who beat the San Jose Sharks 4 games to 2 a year ago, are the first team to win back-to-back Stanley Cup since the 1997 and 1998 Detroit Red Wings. It is also the Penguins fifth Stanley Cup after wins in 1991, 1992, 2009 and 2016, tied with the Edmonton Oilers for the second-most in the expansion era (1967-present) behind only the Montreal Canadiens, who have won 10, most in the early years of expansion as an Original Six team.
