TITUSVILLE, Pa. (EYT) — An alarming situation involving a man carrying a rifle near Titusville Middle School Tuesday morning ended up not presenting any danger to students; however, the tip that started it all from the town’s mayor has spurred an investigation that may help authorities solve several crimes.

Titusville Chief of Police Harold Minch said his department received a call at 7:22 a.m. from Mayor Esther Smith, who was having coffee at The Well at the East Point. Mayor Smith said a white male was carrying several bags and a rifle while walking across Martin Street toward Central Towers adjacent to the middle school.

“We had middle school kids walking that same route and there was no reason for someone to be walking through that area with a gun at that time,” said Chief Minich.

Several officers were immediately dispatched to the area, and one went directly to the middle school as a precautionary procedure.
