Two Killed, Two Flown from Scene of Fiery Crash

SUMMERVILLE, Pa. (EYT) – Two people were killed and two others were seriously injured in a one-vehicle crash in Clover Township, Jefferson County on Wednesday.

Punxsutawney-based state police say 26-year-old Tyrell F. Ott, of St. Marys, was traveling south on SR-28 around 4:40 p.m. when for unknown reasons, his 2008 Mitsubishi Eclipse traveled into the oncoming lane and then off the east berm before crashing into a large tree.

Police say Ott’s vehicle continued traveling for approximately 28 feet and struck another tree and then spun counter-clockwise approximately 260 degrees before coming to a rest in the northbound lane. The vehicle then caught on fire.

Ott and an unidentified female passenger were pronounced dead at the scene by Jefferson County Coroner Bernard Snyder.

During the rotation of the vehicle, a passenger in the front seat, 24-year-old Christina M. Karnes, of St. Marys, was ejected from the vehicle. She was flown from the scene to UPMC Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh for treatment of major injuries.

Another passenger, 24-year-old Devin E. Mertz, also of St. Marys, was flown from the scene to UPMC Presbyterian in Pittsburgh for treatment of major injuries.

Jefferson County EMS and Summerville Fire Department assisted at the scene.

Authorities say the accident remains under investigation.
