BUTLER COUNTY, Pa. (EYT) — Butler police have charged a Butler County man in connection with a school bus accident in August.

Police say 38-year-old Wayne McCormick of Cabot was under the influence of marijuana when he was driving a cement truck that caused a four-vehicle accident involving a school bus that occurred on August 31, 2012, on East Jefferson Street near the intersection of North Elm Street in Butler.

According to police, McCormick stated he was distracted by a vehicle turning in front of him, then his air brakes malfunctioned, and he was unable to stop in time to prevent a collision.

The crash caused a chain reaction: McCormick struck two vehicles behind the school bus, causing one of them to be pushed into a utility pole.

Sixteen students were on board the bus at the time of the crash; three of them were injured.

One of the other drivers, 18-year-old Brent Ingram of Kittanning, was also injured.

Police confirmed the braking system of McCormick’s cement truck was out of adjustment.
