Cane Attack in Oil City Leads to Felony Assault Charges Against Teen

OIL CITY, Pa. (EYT) – An Oil City teen was jailed on felony charges after he allegedly attacked a man with a cane on Wednesday.

Oil City Police filed the following charges 18-year-old Andrew William Shawgo yesterday in Venango County District Court:

  • Aggravated Assault, Felony 1
  • Simple Assault, Misdemeanor 2
  • Use/Possession Of Drug Paraphernalia, Misdemeanor
  • Int. Possession Contr Subst By Per Not Reg, Misdemeanor
  • Harassment – Subject Other to Physical Contact, Summary

According to a criminal complaint filed by Patrolman Byham, officers responded to 122 Cowell Avenue around 12:23 a.m. for a report of a domestic assault.

Police arrived on scene and found a male victim with a small laceration to his temple.

Officers interviewed a female witness at the residence who stated that her brother, Andrew Shawgo, struck the man on the head with a cane.

Shawgo’s mother and the victim stated that Shawgo was “acting strange and became very angry with them.”

The complaint states that Shawgo allegedly smashed a mirror with a cane and then struck the man with the cane while the man was lying in bed.

When Shawgo was taken into custody, police discovered a small bag of marijuana in his pocket and a blue pipe containing suspected marijuana residue in his backpack.

Shawgo was placed in the Venango County Jail after failing to post $25,000.00 cash bail.

A preliminary hearing is set for September 27 at 8:30 a.m. with Magisterial District Judge Patrick E. Lowrey presiding.
