Four Injured After Skid Steer Travels 18 Ft. Airborne in Four-Vehicle Crash on Rt. 428

VENANGO COUNTY, Pa. (EYT) — Authorities responded to a four-vehicle accident that occurred around 3:13 p.m. on September 18, on State Route 428, 213 feet south of Cherrytree Road, Venango County.

The following drivers were involved in the collision:

Steven C. Hartzell, 55, of Oil City, Pa.
Louis M. Heath, 60, of Cooperstown, Pa.
Heather L. Sharp, 55, of Oil City, Pa.
Carrie M. Kee, 34, of Oil City, Pa.

According to police, this crash occurred as a John Deere 240 Skid Steer loader, driven by Heath, was traveling south on SR 428 approximately 100 yards south of Cherrytree Road. The John Deere was struck in its rear by Hartzell who was also traveling south on SR 428 in a 1997 Chevrolet Suburban.

At the time of the initial impact, the John Deere went airborne for approximately 18 feet and landed on the berm of SR 428 facing southwest with its rear end still on the road.

The Suburban then spun clockwise into the northbound lane and was struck by Sharp who was traveling northbound on SR 428 in a 1997 Ford F-150 Lariat.

The Suburban then continued to spin clockwise and came to its final place of rest after striking an embankment on the east side of SR 428 facing east. The vehicle sustained substantial damage.

The Ford spun counterclockwise, crossed the southbound lane of SR 428, struck an embankment, went over the same embankment, and came to its final place of rest facing west in a yard.

Kee who was traveling south on SR 428 in a 2007 Ford Expedition then struck the John Deere in the rear end causing the John Deere to spin clockwise and strike an embankment on the west side of the berm of SR 428 and come to rest facing east on the southbound lane of SR 428.

Hartzell was not using his seat belt and was flown to Hamot Medical Center for moderate injuries to his head.

Heath was using his seat belt and was taken to Titusville Hospital for unknown injuries.

Sharp was using her seat belt and was taken to UPMC Northwest for a laceration on her leg.

Kee and a 3-year-old male passenger were both taken to UPMC Northwest for checkups.

Oakland Fire Department and Fire Police assisted with cleanup and traffic control.

Community Ambulances and Oakland and Cornplanter rescue trucks were on the scene to assist with the injured.

Minich’s and Venango Towing towed vehicles from the scene.

Hartzell was charged with a traffic violation.
