Charles Eugene Carrick, 85, Big Run, died Sunday, October 1, 2017, at Concordia of Monroeville Nursing Home.

He was born November 11, 1931, in Harmony, a son of the late Margaret O. (Murphy) and George Nesbit.

On June 20, 1954, he married his beloved wife M. Jean Tibby, who preceded him in death on April 10, 2002.

He attended Harmony Grade School from first to eighth grade. He graduated from Punxsutawney High School in June of 1949. He attended the Carnegie Institute of Technology from 1956-1961 and received his Bachelor of Architecture in 1961 and was elected to the Tau Sigma Delta Fine Arts Honorary Society.

Gene grew up in the Punxsutawney Area from 1931 to 1950. He lived in the Pittsburgh area, thirty-three years in Edgewood, from 1956-1994, having moved back to Big Run in November of 1994.

Gene served in the U.S. Air Force from February 1951 to March of 1956. He was in the Aviation Cadets from 1952-1953, commissioned Second Lieutenant in March of 1953. He was awarded wings as Navigator/Bombardier/Radar Observer in May of 1953. He taught advanced Navigator Trainees as an Instructor Navigator from 1953 to 1956 at Mather Air Force Base in Sacramento, California. He was separated as a First Lieutenant in March of 1956.

He was a Registered Architect in Pennsylvania and Maryland having worked for various firms in the Pittsburgh area, including Carrick & Downey Architects, until retirement in December of 1992 as Manager of Architectural Projects, Allegheny County Department of Engineering and Construction. He managed the team for program development, design, and construction of the new Allegheny County Jail from 1990 to 1992.

He was past president of Wilkinsburg Kiwanis Clubs, and Wilkinsburg Boys and Girls Club and served on the Board of Boys and Girls Clubs of Western, PA. In Punxsutawney, he served on boards of the Punxsutawney Area Historical and Genealogical Society, Circle Hill Cemetery, and the Anita Cemetery Association (Knights of Pythias Cemetery).

Gene enjoyed stream fishing, jazz music, and history.

Surviving relatives include four children, David R. Carrick and wife Amy Edelman, Patrick J. Carrick, Matthew T. Carrick, and Amy M. Donachy and husband Christopher; four grandchildren, Christopher M. Carrick, James C. Carrick, Sarah E. Friedenberger and husband Rob, and Megan C. Carrick; a great-grandson Judah Friedenberger; and four brothers, David M. Carrick and wife Esther, G. Richard Carrick and wife Ruth Ann, Ronald K. “Butch” Carrick, and Myron J. “Myke” Carrick.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a brother James R. Carrick.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, October 4, 2017, at the Deeley Funeral Home, Punxsutawney.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, October 5, 2017, at the funeral home with Pastor Michele Huey officiating.

Interment will be in Circle Hill Cemetery, Punxsutawney.
