Charley MartzCharley Claude Martz, 89, of Clarion, died Friday, January 13, 2017, at West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh, following an illness.

Born April 24, 1927, in Sprankle Mills, he was the son of the Charley J. and Catherine J. (Wachob) Martz. Claude attended Delp School and later attended Clarion Area School.

He was a U.S. Army Veteran. In 1948, Claude attended the Commercial Trade Institute in Chicago, Illinois, where he earned a diploma in Auto Mechanic and Auto Body Repair. In 1950, he was employed by Freas Motor Company and worked there until 1969 when he started employment at Clarion University in the maintenance department until retirement in 1989.

Claude was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Clarion.

Claude married Carol Orcutt McMunn on July 12, 1962. She preceded him in death on January 8, 2008.

Claude and Carol loved camping and their winter vacations in Florida. Claude enjoyed woodworking and Carol made crafts that they displayed at many craft shows, including the Autumn Leaf Festival. All the children and grandchildren have many wooden items in their homes that were made by Claude.

Until a decline in his health, Claude enjoyed going to the senior center. He also enjoyed baking, canning, and making applesauce, apple butter, jelly, and jam. He also looked forward to going to breakfast and lunch with friends. Claude’s strong faith and devotion to his family have been his priority in life.

Claude is survived by one sister, Mary McMunn, of Sligo.

Also surviving are one son, David McMunn and his wife Diane, of Knox; two daughters, Marsha McCullough and her husband David, of Clarion and Garnet Stauffer and her husband, John, of DuBois. Claude has six grandchildren: Kyle McMunn and his wife Brittany of Nashville, TN; Jessica Morphy and her husband, Bryan, of Erie; Ryan Breniman of Clarion; Amber Fisher and her husband, Ryan, of State College; Jocelyn Spencer and her husband, Tony, of DuBois; and Ashley Johns and her husband, Kevin, of Brookville. He also has two great-grandchildren, Bailee Grace Spencer and Colby Jane Fisher; two step-grandchildren, David McCullough and his wife, Lacey, of Seneca; Melissa Vendetti and her husband, Frank, of Gibsonia; two step-great-grandchildren, Ava and Owen McCullough; and he was looking forward to the birth of twin great-grandsons in March.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Donald McMunn.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Clarion-Forest VNA, 271 Perkins Road, Clarion, PA 16214, (www.cfvna.org), or the Churchville Cemetery Association, 106 Tintown Road, Sligo, PA 16255.

Arrangements are under the care of the Goble Funeral Home and Crematory, 330 Wood Street in Clarion where the family will receive visitors from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday.

An additional visitation will be held from 10-11 a.m. on Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church, 600 Wood Street in Clarion to be followed by funeral services at 11:00 a.m. at the church.

Rev. Kevin R. Haley and Rev. Loye Startzell will officiate.

Interment will be in the Churchville Cemetery near Curllsville.
