Clara J. Slater, 85, of Oil City, died peacefully at her daughter’s home on Thursday, November 16, 2017.

Born Decem, er 6, 1931 in Brooklyn, NY, she was a daughter of the late George W. M. and Julia D. Hernandez Williams.

She attended P.S. 78, Nathan Hale Jr. High and graduated from John Jay High School in 1952.

Clara and her two children relocated from New York to Oil City in 1972.

While living in New York City, she worked for numerous employees, including New York Life Insurance Company, Travelers Insurance Company, Ataka Ltd, Standard Brands, Collier-MacMillan Publishing House, and Grossett & Dunlap Publishers.

Once Clara moved to Oil City, she worked for First Seneca Bank, Oil City Hospital, Bon-Ton, Brodys, Northwest PA regional Planning & Development Commission, Oil City School District, Children’s Aid Society, Community Services, and eventually she retired from the Venango County Area Agency on Aging.

After her retirement, she volunteered via RSVP, literacy council, and Beverly Health Care.

Clara was a member of Second Presbyterian Church in Oil City.

Mrs. Slater belonged to the Woman’s Auxillary, Good Friends Singles Group in Clarion, PA, YWCA Gallivanters Travel Group and the Oil Valley Scarlet Ladies, Red Hatters Group.

She enjoyed arts & crafts, drawing, gardening, music, dance, and travel, and mostly spending time with family and friends.

Clara was married to James Paul Michaels on August 18, 1956.

On June 14, 1979, she was married to Eugene Robert Slater, who preceded her in death on February 20, 1989.

Mrs. Slater is survived by a daughter, Dana Michaels Shuffstall and husband Jeffrey of Oil City and a son, Darren James Michaels.

Also surviving are four grandchildren, Danielle Nicole Harton of Oil City, Erasha Sawatsky of Saint Michaels, Maryland, Kahlib Michaels of Sarasota, FL, and Elexa Clair Michaels of Florida; four great-grandchildren, Lacey Claire Westerman, Allie Brooke Harton, Liam Jeffrey Harton all of Oil City, and Brayden Dortch of Saint Michaels, Maryland.

Clara is also survived by a sister, Ruth Lee and husband David, of Franklin, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother Frank Hernandez and granddaughter Ashley Brooke Shuffstall.

Friends may call at the Morrison Funeral Home on Tuesday from 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 8 pm.

A memorial service will be held in the future at the family’s convenience.

Interment will be in Franklin Cemetery.

The family suggests memorials be made to the Venango County VNA or to the American Red Cross.
