SLIGO, Pa. (EYT) – 52-year-old James Michael Shimmons of Sligo allegedly threatened to kill his father during a domestic disturbance on July 15.

According to court documents reviewed by exploreClarion.com, 79-year-old Cloyd Shimmons was allegedly assaulted by his 52-year-old son, James Michael Shimmons, during a heated argument on July 15.

Cloyd Shimmons was later transported to UPMC Presbyterian in Pittsburgh where he was pronounced dead yesterday.

According to the documents, Southern Clarion County Regional police officer Anthony Sawl was dispatched to 427 Colerain Street in Sligo Borough for an assault in progress around 3:55 a.m. on July 15.

Upon Officer Sawl’s arrival, he found blood splattered throughout the living room floor and into the kitchen and the TV room. Officer Sawl found Cloyd Shimmons in the TV room, lying on a sofa holding a rag to his face and nose area. There was profuse bleeding of the nose and bleeding from the left side of the face.

The documents say the elder Shimmons told police that his son, James Shimmons, had caused the injuries.

Cloyd Shimmons told police that the dispute started when he heard loud music and loud noise coming from a television in his son’s room. Shimmons stated that he went into the room and found his son and his son’s girlfriend having sexual relations.

Cloyd Shimmons told police he stated to his son, “Not in my house.”

James Shimmons allegedly followed his father out into the hallway where his father allegedly slapped him several times. James Shimmons allegedly proceeded to strike Cloyd Shimmons in the face, causing the victim to fall to the floor. James Shimmons then allegedly jumped on the victim and struck him with his fists.

Cloyd Shimmons told police that his son threatened to “kill him.”

James Shimmons’ girlfriend pulled him from his father according to court documents.

Cloyd Shimmons also told police that prior to the incident, the defendant and the defendant’s girlfriend were in the TV room with him (the father) drinking alcohol.

Officer Sawl’s report indicates that Cloyd Shimmons was not under the influence of alcohol.

Cloyd Shimmons, who had a blood disorder, was taken via ambulance to the Clarion Hospital Emergency Room for severe injuries to his nose and left cheek. Reports also indicate he sustained bruising throughout his body.

The defendant departed the house prior to police arrival.

James Shimmons was later taken into custody at the scene.

He was then transported to New Bethlehem Police Station for processing.

Shimmons was arraigned before District Judge Timothy Schill.

Bail was set at $5,000 but that amount was raised to $100,000 at the request of District Attorney Mark Aaron.

James Shimmons currently faces charges of felony aggravated assault, misdemeanor terroristic threats, and summary harassment; more charges could be forthcoming pending further investigation.

The investigation is being conducted by PA State Police, Southern Clarion County Regional Police Department, Clarion County District Attorney’s office, and the Clarion County Sheriff’s office.

Several calls to Clarion County Sheriff Rex Munsee were not returned.
