Clarion U. Baseball Splits a Pair of Games Sunday

STROUDSBURG, Pa. – Ending their weekend road trip, the Clarion University baseball team went 1-1 Sunday in doubleheader action, taking the opening matchup against Saint Anselm 12-4, and dropping the second game to East Stroudsburg by a final score of 3-2.

The win and loss moves Clarion’s overall record to 9-10 on the season. The Blue and Gold will open PSAC West play against the two-time defending PSAC Champions, the Seton Hill Griffins, on Friday

Game 1
Clarion was in complete control of game one from the very first pitch. The Golden Eagles opened up scoring in the first inning when Chandler Palyas led the inning off with an inside the park home run to left field and that set the tone for the rest of the ballgame.

The lead grew even bigger in the top of the second inning, courtesy to a Ben Barth double that scored two for the Blue and Gold to make the score 3-0. Saint Anselm grabbed one run back in the bottom of the second but Clarion would add two more runs in the top of the third inning thanks to an Austin Blauser single that scored Alex Ficorilli and Cole Shaffer to push the lead to 5-1.

Ficorilli picked up an RBI of his own in the top of the fourth when a sacrifice fly to right field scored Barth stretching the Clarion lead to 6-1.

The Golden Eagles would add one more run in the top of the sixth on a Nick Fugh double to out Clarion ahead 7-1. The Golden Eagles notched five more runs in the eighth inning. The big inning was thanks to a single by Will Constantin, a sac fly by Shaffer, a groundout by Palyas, and a double by Bryce Jackson.

Kyler Mellott got the start for the Golden Eagles. He went seven innings, allowing one run on three hits and striking out eight, notching his second win of the young season.

On the day Clarion racked up 13 hits. Barth and Blauser each managed multiple hits for the Golden Eagles, while Barth led the Blue and Gold with three hits in five at bats. Barth also led the Golden Eagles with three stolen bases, as they ran wild on the base paths with six stolen bases.

Game 2
Golden Eagles fell behind early and couldn’t come back as East Stroudsburg took the lead on a double in the first inning.

The pitching was strong on both sides as the Clarion pitching staff sat down three Warriors batters, while East Stroudsburg’s pitchers struck out nine,

East Stroudsburg got on the board in the first inning when Brock Kauffman doubled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run. The game would remain 1-0 until the bottom of the sixth inning when the Warriors were able to get two more runs plated stretching their lead to 3-0.

The Golden Eagles would pull within striking distance in the top of the seventh inning when a single from freshman Tim Irons scored Ficorilli pulling Clarion within two runs. Fellow freshman Dan Fox drove in another run in the same inning when he singled up the middle to score Irons but that is as close as the Blue and Gold would get.

Cam Voss toed the rubber for East Stroudsburg. He lasted six innings, allowing one hit and zero runs while striking out eight.

Jeremynodzier got the nod on the mound for Clarion. He surrendered three runs on four hits over five and a third innings, striking out one. Dereck Pritchard threw two and two-thirds innings in relief.

The Golden Eagles collected six hits. Ficorilli and Irons each collected multiple hits for Golden Eagles, each managing two hits to lead Clarion.
