Williams’ name has been removed from the University’s athletic website.

“Marcess and Al (assistant coach Al Modrejewski) will not have their contracts renewed by the University,” Clarion University Sports Information Director Sean Fagan said in an e-mail to exploreClarion Tuesday night in response to a question about both coaches’ status.

Williams went 40-98 in five years with the Golden Eagles including 25-84 in PSAC play. Clarion made the PSAC playoffs in 2016 when it went 14-16 overall and 10-12 in the PSAC West but the Golden Eagles went 9-45 overall over the past two years, including 6-20 overall and 4-17 in the PSAC West this season.

While Williams was let go, exploreClarion has learned Ashley’s contract will be renewed. Ashley’s record was a net one game better overall than Williams’ at 42-98 including 27-82 in the PSAC over the last years. The women’s team made the PSAC Playoffs in 2017 when the Golden Eagles went 15-14 overall and 12-10 in the PSAC West. The women’s team was 16-40 overall and 5-38 in the PSAC West the past two season including 9-19 this year with a 3-18 conference mark.

“Jana continues to be employed by the University,” Fagan confirmed.

When asked why Ashley, whose record is nearly identical to Williams, was being kept while Williams, the first African-American coach in school history, was being let go, Fagan refused to comment.

“We cannot offer any further comment on personnel matters,” Fagan said.
