CLARION, Pa. – Clarion University women’s volleyball coach Jennifer Mills has announced the signing of two more players to the Class of 2014 recruiting class.

Setter Miranda Weston of Canon-McMillan High School in Canonsburg, Pa., a suburb of Pittsburgh and outside hitter Taylor Braunagel of Delaware Valley High School in Milford, Pa., in Northeastern Pennsylvania join a class that includes five players who signed in the early signing period.

“I’m extremely excited about our recruiting class,” Mills, the winningest coach in school history with 177 wins in seven seasons, said. “I believe (assistant coach) Jon (Strub) and I have worked hard to fill a void from graduation and to bring in student-athletes who will push to compete immediately in several positions.”

Weston, the daughter of Jon and Erin Weston, was a four-year varsity starter for Canon-McMillan and helped lead the Big Macs to their first playoff spot in eight years in 2012. She then helped Canon-McMillan to an undefeated section championship as a senior in 2013. She set the school record with over 1,000 assists as a senior while adding 570 digs, 192 kills and 74 blocks while being voted team MVP for the second straight year. She was a first-team WPIAL AAA All-Star in both 2012 and 2013 after being named a third-team All-Star in 2011 and was also named to the Terrific 21 All-Star team as a senior.

“Miranda has a great skill set and will be a much needed addition to our program,” Mills said. “In the past two seasons, we’ve been very thin at the setter position due to injuries, and I believe bringing in a setter of Miranda’s caliber not only takes care of that problem but she will immediately impact the level at which our hitters are able to attack. We should have some great competition in our gym for this position. She has great hands and understands the game, and she has had training from one of the premier coaches in the Pittsburgh area in Brian Begor.”

Braunagel, the daughter of Carl Braunagel and Mary Jo and Mike Murray, has experience at all three front-row position and was named to the Wyoming Valley All-Conference team for three consecutive years and to the Pennsylvania Class AAA All-State team while helping Delaware Valley to four District 2 Class AAA titles including the final two as the team captain.

“Taylor is a great addition to our program,” Mills said. “She is a versatile attacker who has experience playing multiple positions. She has a great attitude and will contribute to the great team dynamic we have. She is an explosive player with a great arm, and I believe she will make an immediate impact in our program. I’m very excited to see Taylor develop over the course of her time at Clarion University.”

Weston and Braunagel join outside hitter/Libero Jessica Samuels (North Allegheny High School), middle hitter Gabby Olson (Pine-Richland High School), outside hitter/Libero Catherine Ferragonio (Norwin High School), right-side hitter/outside hitter Shelby Coughenour (Berlin Brothersvalley High School) and Kara Coffman (Rocky River (Ohio) High School) in making up the Class of 2014 for the Golden Eagles, who are the defending PSAC West champions.

“I believe we’ve added much needed depth at the outside hitter position and have factored in that those players could also serve us well as Liberos/defensive specialists,” Mills said. “In addition to being talented on the court, they will continue the trend of stellar academics and service work within our community. I couldn’t be more excited to begin working with our future Golden Eagles.”

NOTES – Clarion qualified for the NCAA Division II playoffs for the fifth straight year in 2013 and won its second PSAC West title in four seasons. The Golden Eagles were also PSAC West and PSAC Champions in 2010 when they won the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region title and advanced to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight for the first time in school history … Clarion has been to the NCAA Division II postseason in 10 of the past 12 years.
