Clarion U. Women’s Basketball No Match for No. 10 Cal (Pa.)

| January 31, 2019

CALIFORNIA, Pa. – Playing a top-10 opponent for the second time in less than a week, the Clarion women’s basketball team fell on the road on Wednesday night, dropping a 91-62 decision to California (Pa.) at the Convocation Center.

The Golden Eagles (7-13, 1-12 PSAC) will play on the road again this weekend when they take on Seton Hill.

Jordan Bekelja pulled within just two baskets of reaching 1,000 points in her career, scoring 17 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field and 4-of-4 from the free throw line. That led a Golden Eagle effort that shot very well from the field, as Clarion went 23-of-39 (.590) from the field and 6-of-8 (.750) from three-point range.

Kadijah Dickson got back on track from a scoring standpoint, scoring 13 points and also recording team highs with six assists and five rebounds. The Golden Eagles and the Vulcans played it close in the rebounding battle, with California holding a slim 24-22 advantage on the glass.

The difference in the game came on turnovers, with the Vulcans forcing the Golden Eagles into 25 giveaways and converting that into 41 points.

The Vulcans opened the game on a 17-3 lead but Clarion narrowed that lead to just 10 points with 1:21 remaining in the first quarter, and the Golden Eagles never really went away over the course of the game. Bekelja kept the gap at 10 points just 32 seconds into the second quarter, taking a feed from Taylor Moltz and burying a three-pointer to make it 25-15. California started to pull away near the end of the quarter and led 46-28 at halftime.

The lead hung around in the 20s throughout the third quarter, but the Golden Eagles matched the Vulcans bucket for bucket in the fourth quarter to keep it from getting totally out of hand. Neely Whitehead scored all eight of her points in the fourth quarter, going 3-of-3 from the field and 2-of-2 from the free throw line in just eight minutes of action.

Abbey Sporio led Cal with 22 points, Gina Vallecorsa added 18 and Seairra Barrett 14.
