Clarion U. Wrestling Splits a Pair of Matches Sunday

BOONE, N.C. – The Clarion wrestling team posted five pins in the early match to lead them to a doubleheader split on Sunday, defeating Davidson 41-6 and falling to Appalachian State 23-10 in Boone.

The Golden Eagles (1-5) will return home for their first matches in Tippin Gymnasium since November this weekend.

The Golden Eagles finished with five wins by fall over the Wildcats in the early match, and tacked on another win by technical fall for 17 bonus points on the afternoon. Clarion won the final three bouts of the match and five of the last six via pinfall, with three of those coming in the first period. The pin party started with Evan DeLong, who dropped Noah Satterfield in the 165-pound match in just 2:19 of action. Dom Rigous followed up his fourth win by fall of the season at 174 pounds, defeating Conor Fenn just 48 seconds into the second period.

After Scott Marmoll snapped a modest two-match losing streak with a 4-1 win by decision over Konner Pritchard, the streak of pins restarted. Terrell Fields recorded his first win by fall of the season by pinning Ryan Devlin with just 36 remaining in their 197-pound bout, and Evan Daley finished off Will Cooley with just 14 seconds left in the first period of the heavyweight bout. Freshman Cameron Butler closed the day with his second win by fall in his last three bouts, pinning Camden Bertucci just 36 seconds into the first period to seal the team win.

Brock Zacherl got the Golden Eagles on the scoreboard in the 141-pound match, defeating Hunter Costa 21-6 by technical fall in the second quarter. Jake Keller earned a tight win by decision at 149 pounds, holding on for a 7-6 win over Aidan Conroy.

Zacherl and Butler both earned their second wins of the day in the nightcap with the Mountaineers, while Dustin Conti claimed a victory in the 197-pound bout as well. Zacherl posted a major decision over Irvin Enriquez at 141 pounds, winning by a 16-6 mark, and Butler edged Logan Durham 8-5 at 125 pounds. Conti squeaked out a decision over Randall Diabe, winning 4-1.
