Clarion Women Lose to Cal; Heeter Has 13 Points, 6 Rebounds

CALIFORNIA, Pa. – A cold second-half of shooting hurt Clarion in a 69-44 loss at California Wednesday night.

The game was tied at 25 at halftime but Clarion hit just five second-half baskets (5 of 22) including just three in the first 18:30 minutes of the half and was outscored 44-19 in the second half.

Hannah Heeter had 13 points and six rebounds to lead Clarion while shooting 4 of 9 from the field. But Heeter was limited to five points and one rebound on 1 of 2 shooting in the second half. Still, she was the only Golden Eagle in double digits. Emma Fickel added eight points off the bench, and Mariah Gador also had eight tallies.

Clarion (9-11 overall, 5-9 PSAC West) actually led 29-28 following two Aleya Miller free throws with 17:23 to play but Cal went on a 39-9 run over the next 15 minutes that started with a 12-2 stretch that included four three-pointers with the first three being hit by Stephanie Michael, who finished with a game-high 18 points while hitting 6 of 9 threes.

Chelsea McKnight added four threes for the Vulcans (13-5, 9-5) including 4 of 6 from three-point range. Cal hit 11 of 19 threes while Clarion was 13 of 45 (28.9 percent) from the field, the second straight game Clarion has shot less than 30 percent. Ashley Hines had 10 points, five rebounds and three helpers off the bench for Cal.

Clarion returns to action at 5:30 p.m. Saturday when it hosts Edinboro.
