Committee Extends Search for Clarion University President

| March 16, 2018

CLARION, Pa. (EYT) – Clarion University’s search for a new president is far from over.

The Clarion University Council of Trustees held a special public meeting on Thursday at the request of the Presidential Search Committee and decided to continue its search for more candidates to submit to the Council of Trustees.

“The Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education’s policy requires two candidates to be forwarded to the Council of Trustees,” said trustee Milissa Bauer, chairperson of the search committee.

“Based on feedback from the constituent groups and our desire to find the best candidates, the committee has decided to extend the search in order to find additional qualified candidates to be considered for Clarion University President. The committee will move forward immediately to seek additional candidates.”

“Trustee Bauer built a synergy among her Presidential Search Committee,” said J.D. Dunbar, Council of Trustees chairperson. “It was an obvious bonding process, as each member served the highest value of time commitment with honor to Clarion University. I am enormously proud of every member of the Presidential Search Committee and look forward to their continued engagement in this process.”

Dunbar and the Presidential Search Committee would like to express their sincere appreciation to those who attended the public forums and provided feedback about the candidates.

Dr. David Urban, Dean of Jennings A. Jones College of Business at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, spoke at an open forum March 8.

Urban is one of three candidates vying for the open position of Clarion University President.

The two other candidates for the open position of Clarion University President – Dr. Robert (Bob) Glenn and Dr. Martin Abraham—each spoke at previous forums.

Dr. Glenn, president of Athens State University in Athens, Alabama, spoke at an open forum on February 26, focusing much of his opening statement and many of his answers on community and communication.

Dr. Abraham, Provost of Youngstown State University in Youngstown, Ohio, spoke at an open forum on March 5. He focused a good portion of his opening statement and several of his answers on enrollment and access education.

Peter C. Fackler continues to serve as interim president of Clarion University.

Fackler previously served Clarion University as interim vice president for finance and administration from November 2012 to February 2015.

He will serve as interim president at Clarion until the successful conclusion of a national search for a permanent president.

Former Clarion University president Karen Whitney is now serving as interim chancellor of the State System of Higher Education. Whitney was the university president from July 2010 to September 2017 when university enrollment dropped 28 percent.

Total enrollment in 2010-11 was 7,315; 6,991 in 2011-12; 6,520 in 2012-13; 6,080 in 2013-14; 5,712 in 2014-15; 5,368 in 2015-16; and 5,224 in 2016-17 – for a drop of over 28 percent since 2010.
