Connie Brock

Connie BrockFriends and family will gather on March 31st to say farewell to Connie Brock who passed away earlier this month at the age of 69 following a stoic battle against a non-smoking form of lung cancer.

Born in Watsonville, CA, her family moved to Pennsylvania when she was a small child where she remained throughout her school years. Upon graduating from Franklin Senior high school, Connie returned west to Santa Cruz, CA where she settled in permanently.

Connie worked for many years providing at-home therapeutic massage. She was also a multi-talented fabrics art expert, doll maker, and longtime member of the Pajaro Valley Quilt Association (PVQA), serving in a variety of its board positions. In recent years, Connie oversaw the wonderfully attractive Quilt Show display case. She was active with the PVQA’s small quilt group, Santa Cruz Selvedges, Billie Street’s rug making group, Roxanne Langan’s RAGS, and the Good Golly Miss Dolly doll making group. Her exhibits at the Santa Cruz County Fair won numerous awards throughout the years. She leaves many dear friends and colleagues who shared in her passions for wool applique, doll making, crazy quilting, and rug braiding.

Eager to start each day at pre-dawn with a hot cappuccino, she enjoyed life at her own pace and took nothing for granted. Connie’s other pastimes included reading Agatha Christie mystery novels, expanding her skills at Empty Spools quilt-making workshops in Pacific Grove, CA and treasure hunting for materials at antique fairs and specialty shops. Cookies were her sweets-of-choice and she took pleasure in baking batches of chocolate chip cookies for special occasions including the tradition of two dozen for her son on every one of his birthdays. When not inspired to bake her own, she indulged in those from The Buttery, in particular their pecan sandies which pair well with either tea or coffee. While cookie baking was about the extent of her adventures in the kitchen, she often bragged about her husband Wouter’s culinary skills, especially his savory Indonesian lumpia, the “spring roll equivalent” in southeast asia.

She leaves in California her loving spouse and dearest companion of 17 years, Wouter Scheepe of Santa Cruz, her son and daughter-in-law Greg Bargas Jr. and Laura Bargas of Scotts Valley, sister-in-law & brother-in-law Yvonne & Michael Garden of Redwood City. Connie is also survived by her parents Charles and Helen Elaine Brock of Franklin, PA, and her 8 younger siblings Terry Heckman, Dave Brock, Linda Sands, Dennis Brock, Ed Brock, Jane McAuley, Roger Brock & Joe Brock.

A time to gather for celebrating the life of Connie, including a reception for viewing some of her artworks, will be held on March 31st at the Pasatiempo Golf Club Hollins House at 11:30 am.

If you cannot join in the event but wish to share a thought or prayer with her family, please visit the Benito & Azzaro Pacific Gardens Chapel web homepage (pacificgardenschapel.com).

The family would also like to thank the nursing staff at Dominican Hospital, the Bennett & Suzy Katz Cancer Resource Center, and the Dominican Infusion Center where she received excellent care and kindness during her final year.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests a small act of kindness be made to a loved one or even a stranger. If making a contribution in her memory, one charity dear to Connie’s heart was the Pajaro Valley Quilt Association (pvqa.org) community outreach group, providing quilts to children and adults in need.
