Cook Forest State Park Hosting Living History Weekend May 26-28

cook forest living history 2COOKSBURG, Pa. (EYT) – Cook Forest State Park will hosts its annual Living History Weekend from May 26 to May 28.

The fun-filled weekend of living history will include various historical eras, such as Medieval; French & Indian War; Lumber Era; Industrial Revolution; Civil War; Spanish American War; and the War on Terror.

Join living historian and master story-teller, Paul Stillman from Historically Speaking!, and historical interpreters, Dave Clark, and Dennis Knowles, as they take participants through these noteworthy periods in history through first person character portrayals, and hands-on demonstrations.

Schedule of Events

Friday, May 26, from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

‘Cathedral by Candlelight’

Walk back in time with historical characters from the past. Come view the ancient forest as we hike beneath the giants by candlelight.

Please meet at the Log Cabin Inn Environmental Learning Classroom where a 1750s French Marine will guide participants into the depths of the Forest Cathedral to meet an awaiting Seneca Warrior on his trek south along the Olean Trail.

Saturday, May 27, from 10:00 a.m. to Noon

Paul Stillman as a ‘Seneca Indian’

A Native American visits from the past on his trip from New York as he travels south along the historic Olean Trail.

Please bring camp chairs and meet at the Log Cabin Inn Environmental Learning Classroom where he will be preparing sinew for his trip.

Saturday, May 27, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Logging, Dogging, & Hewing: An 1800’s Timber Operation’

Celebrate Cook Forest’s lumber heritage with Dale Luthringer by observing various tools of the trade, “in-period” costume, and ‘hewing to the line’.  Participants are encouraged to bring a partner to test skills at the two-man crosscut saw.

Please bring camp chairs and meet at the Log Cabin Inn Environmental Learning Classroom.

Saturday, May 27, from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Paul Stillman, Dave Clark, and Dennis Knowles as ‘The North Meets South’  Participants will view the Civil War through a New York regimental line soldier and a rebels of the Army of Northern Virginia.

Please bring camp chairs and meet at the Log Cabin Inn Environmental Learning Classroom.

Saturday, May 27, from 8:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Please bring chairs & blankets and meet at the Ridge Camp Park Amphitheater.

Sunday, May 28, from 1:00 p.m to 2:00 p.m.

Dave Clark as a ‘Private of the 71st New York Regiment During the Spanish American War’

Private Charles Johnson Post recounts the charge up San Juan Hill.

Post, an illustrator for William Randolph Hearst’s newspaper, endured the hardships of a soldier in the “Splendid Little War in Cuba”.

Sunday, May 28, from 2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Paul Stillman as a ‘Colonial Craftsman’

Learn how things were made during the early part of the 18th century during a quill and bamboo pen fabrication workshop.

Please meet bring camp chairs and meet at the Log Cabin Inn Environmental Learning Classroom.

Sunday, May 28, from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Dennis Knowles as a ‘Line Officer in Afghanistan’

Learn about those who continue to give their all to defend our nation from terrorists at home and abroad.

Please bring camp chairs and meet at the Log Cabin Inn Environmental Learning Classroom.

Paul Stillman as ‘Ethyerhode of Pyggewhystle’ 

A medieval craftsmen from 13th century England – a free man and articifer.  Please bring chairs and blankets and meet at the Ridge Camp Park Amphitheater.
