SENECA, Pa. — A committee of parents, faculty, and administrators in the Cranberry Area School District are aiming to construct a new ADA-compliant playground that would replace the elementary school’s existing structures.

A release issued by the committee pointed out that some wooden portions of the playground were constructed 25 years ago. The plastic portion of the playground has required multiple expensive repairs.

The committee also said mulch around the playground limits access to children with physical limitations and is “a mess in the wet seasons.”

Over the summer, Principal Horner organized the committee of parents and interested faculty. It agreed on the following principles:

  • A variety of new play structures that would be voted upon by the student body.
  • The swingsets were in satisfactory condition and would remain.
  • A durable surface that would allow handicap accessibility.
  • At least 2-4 ADA-approved play structures to accommodate all students.

The committee anticipates the final product will be “a long lasting playground that can be used by both the students and community for many years to come.”

“To meet this, we are aiming to raise $250,000.00 by February 1, 2019, in order to meet our goal to have the playground completed by the start of the 2019-2020 school year,” said committee member Theresa Weldon.

“We will be seeking support from the community to clear the play area and prep for the installation and removal of old equipment during the summer.”

The committee has partnered with Bridge Builders Community Foundation to ensure those donating will receive tax deductible donations.
