Cranberry Man Accused of Choking, Striking Victim During Altercation

JEFFERSON CO., Pa. (EYT) – Assault charges have been filed against a Venango County man accused of choking and striking a victim during a dispute in Jefferson County.

Court documents indicate the DuBois-based State Police filed criminal charges against 40-year-old Brian Todd Hangerman, of Cranberry.

According to a criminal complaint, around 1:20 a.m. on Thursday, October 4, Trooper Bowser, of the DuBois-based State Police, was dispatched to an assault in progress at a location on Well Road in Polk Township, Jefferson County.

Upon his arrival, Trooper Bowser made contact with a known male who stated that he and Brian Todd Hangerman had engaged in a verbal altercation that turned physical, according to the complaint.

Trooper Bowser observed that the victim had recent physical injuries to his face consisting of black and blue marks near his eyes, as well as a small red mark under his right eye. He also noted red marks and small cuts on the victim’s neck, the complaint states.

According to the complaint, the victim related that Hangerman had entered into a verbal argument with a known female and was calling her names. The victim confronted Hangerman about the argument and the incident between the two men turned physical. They began pushing each other; then Hangerman allegedly struck and pushed the victim and wrapped both of his hands around the victim’s neck and began choking him.

Based on the investigation, Hangerman was arraigned at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 4, in Magisterial District Judge David B. Inzana’s office on the following charges:

  • Simple Assault, Misdemeanor 1
  • Strangulation – Applying Pressure to Throat or Neck, Misdemeanor 2
  • Harassment – Subject Other to Physical Contact, Summary

Hangerman remains free on $5,000.00 unsecured bail.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 9:45 a.m. on Tuesday, October 30, with Judge Inzana presiding.
