Gift of Health

Hello Everyone,

It is that time of year when once again the holidays are upon us. Most of us are thinking about what gift we need for this person or that person. Did I forget anyone? Office parties, family get-togethers, long lost relatives, and so on. Then, there are the stresses of the holiday season, planning, shopping, traveling, getting the house ready, and more.

Some people will be troubled by the financial burdens of the holidays, other by obligations that need to be met, for others it may be their first holiday alone. All these stresses can be potentially exacerbated by the temptation of eating sugary food, junk food, fast food, and alcohol. All of this can lead to greater stress responses and symptoms such as ANXIETY, LONELINESS, TROUBLE SLEEPING, IRRITABILITY, UNHEALTHY EATING, ETC.

To help reduce the problems brought on by holiday stresses, try to maintain your healthy activities and habits.

If possible, maybe increase them a bit. For example, say you have an exercise routine that you normally follow, do your best to keep it up despite the holiday schedule. If you don’t have one this may be a good time to start. Exercise helps you to improve your mood, helps with healthy sleep patterns, balances blood sugar, and helps you to “let off stream.” (Think Irritability).

Sure, we know that during holidays, people tend to relax a little on their food choices. Here comes the ten pounds that we are going to worry about come January. (More on this later). During this season, just watch the choices you make. Add in more healthy nutritious meals and snacks. Do more with fruits and vegetables. Try going for whole grains and leaner proteins. Try taking smaller portions of treats and comfort foods.

Also, this time of year colds and flu start passing around. Most of us don’t take the time to think about that. But, with a lot of the things we are not doing, our immune systems are being pulled down (unhealthy eating, stress, etc.).

Once we get a cold or flu then we think about what we should have been doing.

First, wash your hands when out, more colds and flu are spread this way, from touching things and greeting people.

The second thing we can do is keep our immune system strong. There are a number of herbs and supplements that can help with this.

As for any of the above issues, please stop in and talk with our staff at Cranberry Wellness Center or God’s Little Garden and ask what will help.

Until next time we here at Cranberry Wellness Center and God’s Little Garden wish all of you a VERY HAPPY HOLIDAY SEASON!

Calvin
