Cranberry’s Hancock Still Alive For State Medal

HERSHEY, Pa. (D9Sports) — Cranberry’s Josh Hancock started his state tournament with a 1-1 mark Thursday in the PIAA Championships at Hershey’s Giant Center.

At 145 pounds, Hancock opened with a 7-2 loss to Penns Valley’s Jared Hurd before winning his first consolation match with an 8-6 decision over Lennard-Dale’s Andrew Barnett.

Barnett scored the match’s first points on a reversal early in the second period, but Hancock cranked it up after that.

The Berry wrestler escaped to make it 2-1, but Barnett’s takedown with 1:11 left made it 4-1.

With 47 seconds left in the second, Hancock’s reversal made it 4-3, then he added three back points to take a 6-4 lead to the third.

Hancock escaped with 1:21 remaining to push his lead to 7-4.

But Barnett came back with a takedown with 1:02 left to trim the margin to one, narrow point.

Hancock got a point back on an escape with 46 seconds left and held on for an 8-6 triumph.

Hancock takes on Boiling Springs’s Cameron Palmer in the consolations Friday.

Wrestling begins at 9 a.m. Friday with the quarterfinals and second-round consolations.

Third-round consolations begin at 11:45 a.m.
