NEW BETHLEHEM, Pa. (EYT) — Crews responded to the scene of a large fire in the downtown New Bethlehem area earlier today.

At 9:24 a.m., local fire crews were dispatched to the scene of a fire at the office of Dr. Thomas K Kaminsky DDS on Broad Street.

“There has been a major fire today in New Bethlehem at Dr. Kaminsky’s dental office at 422 Broad Street, just east of the highrise at Broad (Route 28) and Wood (Route 66),” said State Representative Donna Oberlander.

Several local fire companies responded to the scene and battled the fire until it was extinguished around 2:30 p.m.

Unconfirmed reports indicate that the fire may have originated as a mattress fire in one of the rental apartments located above the dental office.

According to Hawthorn Assistant Fire Chief Curt Kiehl, no one was injured in the fire.

The building is a complete loss. Francis J. Palo, Inc. Construction Company is currently on the scene securing the building to prevent it from collapsing onto the street.

Officials say the building will be demolished tonight after the fire marshal completes his investigation.

PennDOT has issued issued a travel advisory indicating Route 28 will be closed in both directions from Wood Street (Route 66) to Vine Street during the demolition. A detour will be in place. The road is expected to re-open around 10 p.m.
