Thornton will be recognized at the Central Pennsylvania chapter of the National Football Foundation’s annual banquet, set for March 12.

On May 12, the Korey Stringer Institute will recognize Thornton at their sixth annual awards ceremony and fundraiser to prevent sudden death in the athlete, soldier and laborer. Thornton will receive the KSI Lifesaving Service Award as a credit to his work in the understanding and treatment of concussions, among other areas of expertise. Proceeds from the event will be directed to the UConn Foundation to benefit the Korey Stringer Institute.

“I am honored to selected for these two awards,” Thornton said. “The health and safety of our athletes both here and across the nation is always the primary concern. Clarion University and its administration have been supportive of my involvement in my professional associations, and that has afforded me many different opportunities. This acknowledgment is as much an honor for the University as it is for me.”

Thornton has an extensive background of 33 years in athletic training and collegiate sports experience. He has helped develop performance enhancement programs at multiple universities with content being used at both the baccalaureate and Masters degree levels. He was the President of the NATA from 2012 through 2015, a three-year term. Prior to his election as NATA President, he served the NATA as both Vice President and a member of the Board of Directors, serving as the Director of District II.
