WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Clarion University baseball swept both games in an afternoon doubleheader with the California University Vulcans Saturday afternoon at Consol Energy Field, winning game one by a a score of 4-0 and game two 3-0.

The wins move the Golden Eagles to 6-11 on the season (2-4 PSAC).

The Blue and Gold will return to action Sunday when they take on the Vulcans for afternoon doubleheader at Kelly Automotive Park in Butler, Pa.

Clarion picked up it’s first conference victory of the season in thrilling fashion in game one, as CU starting pitcher Kane McCall threw a complete-game shutout to earn his first win of the season. McCall fanned two and gave up just three hits over seven innings while allowing four walks on the afternoon.

The Blue and Gold enjoyed a solid outing at the plate as well, putting up four runs off of six hits. After going up 2-0 in the first courtesy of RBI singles from Tyler Falk and Garrett Goslaw, Clarion tacked on two more in the fourth to secure the victory in game one.

Not to be outdone by McCall’s outing in game one, Clarion hurler Jeremy Frazier stepped up with a complete-game shutout of his own in game two, striking out seven and surrendering just four hits over seven scoreless.

And again, much like in game one, it was the Golden Eagles striking while the iron was hot to take an early lead in the top of the first. After Falk and Joey Lopez managed to reach on singles, Goslaw walked to load the bases and bring left-fielder John Finke to the plate, who drove in the game’s first run on a fielders choice.

Cole Shaffer would widen Clarion’s lead in the fifth with an RBI single that scored Tom Connell before Finke added one more run for good measure in the 7th to seal it.
