David S. McCartney

David S. McCartney, 89, of Venus, died peacefully surrounded by family, Thursday, June 28, 2018, at the Shippenville Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center.

Born June 13, 1929, in Oil City, he was the son of the late Harry and Gertrude Stoudt McCartney.

Mr. McCartney served in the US Army and then went on to work in the steel industry. He retired from Manions Steel Barrel after 47 years of service.

David was a long-time member of the Oil City Church of the Nazarene, where he served as a church trustee, an usher, and a door greeter. There were no handshakes from David at the church doors, David always gave a hug.

 He enjoyed gardening, yard work, bowling, reading, and working on word puzzles. But most of all, David was known for helping friends and family.

On April 7, 1952, Mr. McCartney was married to the former Mary Elizabeth Swartzfager, who preceded him in death on July 5, 1996. They shared 44 years of marriage together.

Surviving are a son, David W. McCartney and wife, Kathy, of Seneca, and a daughter, Eileen McCartney of Venus; three grandchildren, Jeremy Blum and wife, Kara, Ashley McCartney, and David J. McCartney; and two great-grandchildren, Jacy Blum and Isaac Stokes.

Also surviving are three brothers, Harry J. McCartney and wife, Lydia, of North Carolina, George McCartney of Virginia, and John Dechant of Cochranton; and two sisters, Phyllis King of Oil City, and Frances Dechant of Oil City.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert McCartney and Clarence Dechant, and a sister, Joyce Bower.

Friends may call at the Morrison Funeral Home on Saturday, June 30, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and again from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. with a funeral service to follow at 4:00 p.m. in the funeral home with the Rev. William Hopkins officiating.

Interment will be in Sunset Hill Memorial Gardens at a later date.
