WARREN CO., Pa. (EYT) — Additional details have emerged in the case of a man discovered in possession of child pornography at Warren State Hospital.

Court documents indicate the Warren-based State Police filed the following criminal charges against 58-year-old Thomas Frederick Wolosyn of Warren, on June 27, 2018:

  • Child Pornography, Felony 3 (111 counts)
  • Criminal Use Of Communication Facility, Felony 3 (111 counts)

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 25, with Magisterial District Judge Laura S. Bauer presiding.

Details of the case:

According to a criminal complaint, on Thursday, May 31, Trooper Barnhill, of the Warren-based State Police, was dispatched to the area of the Warren State Hospital for a report of suspected possession of child pornography. He arrived at the scene at 8:36 a.m. and spoke to an employee of the facility.

The employee explained that the hospital began performing a search of the patients’ rooms around 10:45 a.m. on Wednesday, May 30, due to a pair of scissors being missing. The employee stated that as they entered the room of Thomas Frederick Wolosyn, the staff members noticed that Wolosyn became nervous and stood by his dresser.

According to the employee, the initial search ended, and the staff continued to search through the remainder of the facility without finding the scissors. However, due to Wolosyn’s behavior, a doctor ordered that his room be searched more thoroughly. The search began around 7:52 p.m. on Wednesday, May 30.

During the search, it was discovered that he possessed numerous photographs of what appeared to be nude children and adults. The photographs appeared to be sexual in nature. The search ended around 9:10 p.m., and the staff then removed all of the suspicious photographs from Wolosyn’s room, held them in a secure location, and contacted the Warren State Police.

The employee showed Trooper Barnhill a group of the images, and he observed that they included images of an extremely graphic nature depicting nude children, some sexual in nature and others violent in nature.

The complaint notes that Wolosyn is a sex offender who is required to register for Megan’s Law and his prior history includes a conviction for attempted rape of a juvenile in 2002.

Trooper Barnhill interviewed Wolosyn in the security office at Warren State Hospital. As per hospital policy, Trooper Barnhill interviewed Wolosyn with a staff member present in the room.

According to the complaint, Wolosyn initially stated that he printed the pictures because he was “surprised parents would allow their children to be photographed in such a manner.”

Wolosyn stated he had no intention of using the material for sexual gratification.

Wolosyn later allegedly stated that he was tasked with putting on presentations for other patients at the hospital, and claimed that was why he had the pictures.

Wolosyn eventually informed Trooper Barnhill that both of “his previous stories were lies and admitted that he found the pictures on the internet and printed them in the hospital library for the sole purpose of his sexual desires,” according to the complaint.

Wolosyn was asked to provide a written statement and complied.

Trooper Barnhill applied for and was granted a search warrant for Wolosyn’s belongings that had been stored by staff members at the hospital. During a search of the belongings, Trooper Barnhill found 111 black and white printed images that are suspected child pornography.

According to the complaint, the evidence that was obtained indicates that Wolosyn used the state hospital’s computer, printer, internet service provider, routers, modems, and related items to facilitate his possession of the images as far back as February of 2018.

Based on the investigation, charges were filed against Wolosyn on Wednesday, June 27, in Judge Bauer’s office.
