Donald A. Spencer, 90, of Franklin passed away on October 16th at UPMC-Northwest in Seneca.

Born in Franklin on May 20th, 1924, Don was the son of the late Herbert and Isabelle Downey Spencer. He was married to the former Elizabeth Smith on May 29th 1947. She preceded him in death on April 10th, 1991.

Mr. Spencer owned the local franchise of Archway Cookie for 34 years until retiring in 1985.

Don was active for many years in local bowling leagues and once bowled a 300 game. He started golfing at the age of 69, and was still playing two months ago.

Don was an avid Pittsburgh sports fan. He was a member of the BPOE #110, and Franklin Eagles clubs. Don was helpful and supportive of all his family members, and had a great sense of humor and quick wit.

Don was a United States Navy veteran. He served from May 31, 1943 until his Honorable Discharge on February 23, 1946. He served on the USS Chauncey as a Gunner’s Mate. While serving he earned the Victory Medal, American Campaign, Asiatic Pacific 6 Stars, and Philippine Liberation 2 Stars.

Don is survived by his son, David Spencer and his wife, Karen, of Milan, Ohio; and his grandchildren, Sabrina Maxwell of Oil City, Michael Spencer and his wife, Jessica, of Port Clinton, Ohio, and Taline Gardner and her husband Paul, of Monroeville, Ohio. He is additionally survived by his great-grandchildren, Brayden and Olivia Spencer of Port Clinton, Ohio and Ava and Mason Gardner of Monroeville, Ohio. He is also survived by a sister, Elaine S. Fry and her husband, Danny of Franklin.

In addition to his parents and wife, Don was preceded in death by his daughter, Carolyn “Lynn” J. Spencer; his son, Donald D. Spencer; and his grandson, Donald “Scott” Spencer.

Family and friends of Don will be received at the Gardinier Funeral Home, Inc., 1315 Chestnut Street, Franklin on Sunday, October 19 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, October 20th at the Funeral Home, with Rev. David Janz, pastor of Christ United Methodist Church, officiating. Military honors will be accorded by the local V.E.T.S. Honor Guard. Interment will follow at Sunset Hill Memorial Garden.
