Dorothy J. (Means) Best died on Sunday evening, July 30, 2017, at Highland Oaks at Water Run, in Clarion where she had resided since March 2016.

She recently celebrated her 99th birthday with family and friends.

She was a long-time resident of Knox.

Dorothy was born in Kirkman, near Brookville, on June 12, 1918, the daughter of Homer F. and Annie Barbara (Wulfert) Means.

She was the youngest of their eleven children.

While living with her brother, Roy, and his family in Wentlings Corners, Dorothy met W. Calvin Best. They were married June 30, 1937.

Calvin preceded her in death in 1987, two weeks before celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary.

They enjoyed their many family and friends, extending hospitality to all, a shared sense of humor, traveling together, they spent many winters in Ft. Myers Beach, Florida.

Dorothy was an active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Knox, where she fondly remembered teaching the five-year-old Sunday School class for 20 years and participating in church activities.

She enjoyed being a homemaker and hosting holiday celebrations with her family.

She closely followed all Keystone High School music and sports, the Steelers, and the Pirates.

She was an avid fan of her family and their participation in academics, sports, music, and hunting.

Dorothy enjoyed being a member of several ladies card clubs over many years.

She is survived by three children, James C. Best and his wife Sue of Auburn , NY, Lynn A. Best and his wife Patricia of Knox, and Marcia J. (Best) Hoffman and her husband Robert of Franklin.

Surviving are five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. John Best and his wife Carey, and their children Calvin and Maggie of Muskegon MI, Julie Best and her husband, Foy Tootle of Clayton GA, Dana (Best) Rudesyle and her husband, Jeffrey, and their children, Madison, Sadie, Jackson and Eli of Shippenville, Matthew Best and his wife Melanie, and their children Carly, Jordan, and Kelsey of Shippenville, and Nicholas Hoffman and his wife Nichole of Conneaut Lake.

She is also survived by several very loving nieces and nephews, including Merlene Means, LeeAnn and Bill Haun, Barbara Leschorn, and Carol Morgan.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her siblings, sisters Nellie Bullers, Helen Moore, and Ruby Shovestall, and brothers Roy, Clair, Paul, Lloyd, and Maurice, and two infant siblings.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, August 2, from 6- 9 pm at William N Rupert Mortuary Inc., 430 Mendenhall Avenue, Knox.

Funeral services will be officiated by Pastors Karen Parsh and Michael Parsh and will be held on Thursday, August 3, 2017 at 10:30 AM at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 1051 Twin Church Road, Knox PA 16232.

Interment will follow at St. Paul’s Union Cemetery.
