Duane H. Shull

Duane H. Shull, 90, of New Smyrna Beach, FL, passed away on June 17, 2018, at FL Hospital in New Smyrna Beach, FL.

Duane was born on Aug. 9, 1927, at Grove City, PA the son of Howard and Florence Shull.

Duane graduated salutatorian in his class at age 16 from North East, PA high school and after an enlistment in the US Army graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering from Rensselaer, Troy, NY where he was elected to Pi Tau Sigma, Tau Beta Pi, and Sigma Xi honorary societies. He later completed a number of executive management programs during his work career.

He was employed by the General Electric Co. for over 40 years. where he had management responsibility for the manufacture of locomotives and transit cars. He also created and implemented a half-billion-dollar program to modernize and expand the locomotive manufacturing facility. The facility became the largest and most productive one in the United States. He retired in 1988 as a senior vice president in the factory automation business. He was a member of the General Electric Elfun Society and GE Quarter Century Club.

He enjoyed playing golf and was a member of Sugar Mill Country Club in New Smyrna Beach, FL. He was also one of the founders of Lake View Country Club in North East, PA. He had six holes in one and has shot his age. Duane also enjoyed woodworking (grandfather clocks and desks) and constructed a number of model ships.

He resided in North East, PA for about twenty-five years, relocated to Charlottesville, VA, and then to Williamsburg, VA prior to moving to Florida. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 399 and the Presbyterian Church both located in North East, PA.

He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Alice R Shull, of New Smyrna Beach, FL, four children: Ronald Shull of Tucson, AZ, Anne Shull of Erie, PA, Stephen Shull of Hickory, NC, and Carol Jurries of Westerly, RI; and two grandchildren, Melissa Petrusch (Fred) and Hallie Riefstahl, both of Erie, PA, as well as two stepchildren, Tammy Walsh of Ashaway, RI, and Karla Davis of Bridgewater, ME, and three grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, Kenneth Shull (Margaret) of Seneca, SC.

He is preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Barbara Shull.

Funeral services for Duane will be held on Saturday, June 23, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. in the Amity Presbyterian Church, 4605 Scrubgrass Road, Grove City, PA, with an hour of visitations prior to the funeral service. The burial will take place at the Mt Irwin Cemetery, Irwin Township, Venango County, PA.
