Emlenton Voters Focused on Mayoral Contest

| November 8, 2017

EMLENTON, Pa. (EYT) — It may be an off-year election, but many Venango County residents still were out at their respective polling places casting their votes on a cold, gray Tuesday.

In Emlenton, the Civic Center is where borough residents cast their votes, and about 50 had been in by noon.

Linda Grieff, who is Judge of Elections in Emlenton, said the turnout was light compared to the 2016 election.

“It’s been kind of slow,” Grieff said, “The most interest we have is in the mayoral race. We probably average 200-225 voters a year, about 50 percent or a little better.”

Koah Pentz is on the ballot while Jamie Hunt is also a write-in candidate for the office.

While voter interest may not be high this year, 80-year-old John Sasse, pictured below, who is wheelchair-bound due to health issues, was still in to vote.

“I’m happy to see I can still get out to vote,” Sasse joked, “It’s important to vote. If you don’t vote, you get the government you deserve.”

Sasse previously lived nearby in Butler County before moving to a senior living facility in Emlenton in May 2015.

“I like it here. I used to work here years ago as a constable. Emlenton is a nice place to live,” Sasse said.

Grieff, who has worked elections in Emlenton for 40 years, is part of three generations of her family that are involved in working the polls.

Her mother, Julia Grieff, 90, and her daughter, Lacey McNany, were both at the Civic Club assisting voters.

The mayoral race won’t be decided for a few days until write-in votes can be counted. Write-ins totaled 73. Candidate Koah Pentz had 40.
