Ellen W. Lawrence

| September 12, 2019

Ellen W. Lawrence of Clarion passed away on September 10, 2019, at Clarion Hospital. She was 88 years of age.

Born on November 23, 1930, in Clarion, she was the only child of the late Judge Harry R. and Anne Katherine (Shirley) Wilson. On July 23, 1948, she married Everett Clover Lawrence. He preceded her in death on November 6, 2000, after 52 years of marriage. Together, they built a loving home and family.

Ellen leaves a legacy of six children and their spouses, Bob Lawrence (Jan), Suellen Gourley (Jim), Bill Lawrence (Lori), Theo Lawrence (Sharon), Ann Brooks (John), and John Lawrence (Sherri); her 14 grandchildren, who loved their “Cookie Grandma,” Samantha Williams (Charles), Andy Lawrence (Deb), Abbey Clark (Chris), Tim Gourley (Anna), Braun Gourley (Holly), Gretchen Hayes (Randy), Nicole Cornali, Alan Lawrence, Amy Lawrence, Matt Lawrence (Jess), Sara Davis (Brandon), Michelle Brooks, Denise Seidle, Andrea Brooks; and her 16 great-grandchildren, and one great-grandchild to be born in September. She is also fondly remembered by her sister-in-law Doris Lawrence and brother-in-law Howard Lawrence; nieces and nephews and extended family.

Ellen’s home was always open to all – family, friends, and friend’s families. She was the “Cookie Grandma” to her grandchildren for good reason – her baking skills were well known among them and all of those who benefitted from the tasty treats! She kept in touch with her family via text message and was known as the “Emoji Queen.”

She was a lover of all music, especially classical and the music of the Big Band era. She started piano lessons at age six with Orpha Capron and later graduated to studying organ. Ellen accompanied services at the Baptist, Methodist and Presbyterian churches in Clarion. She also played piano for musicals at Clarion University.

Ellen was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Clarion where she served on several boards and committees, as well as at the Presbytery. She was also a Past President of the Board of Directors of the Clarion Hospital and remained active with the Hospital Authority.

In addition to her parents and husband, Ellen was preceded in death by several brothers- and sisters-in-law.
