KNOX, Pa. (EYT) — An Emlenton woman is facing theft by deception charges after writing checks to a local business from a closed account.

Court documents indicate the Clarion County detectives filed criminal charges against 37-year-old Angela Sue Brown, of Emlenton.

According to a criminal complaint, on January 20 and January 23, Angela Sue Brown wrote checks to a Knox Borough store on an account listed with a known bank. All three checks were returned as written on a closed account.

The complaint states that on February 1, and again on February 6, the manager of the local store sent certified letters to Brown at her residence. Brown signed for both certified letters on February 12 but did not reimburse the store for the checks.

The checks included:

– Check dated 1/23/18 in the amount of $145.18
– Check dated 1/23/18 in the amount of $139.22
– Check dated 1/20/18 in the amount of $153.28

The checks totaled $437.68, and the surcharge for the local store on the checks totaled $163.40 for an overall total of $601.08.

Based on the investigation, three counts of first-degree misdemeanor Theft by Deception were filed on Wednesday, May 2, in Magisterial District Judge Amy Long Turk’s office.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 29, with Judge Turk presiding.

A certified summons was issued to Brown on May 2.
