BUTLER COUNTY, Pa. (EYT) — According to sources, several fire departments were at the scene of a farm fire yesterday afternoon in Clearfield Township, Butler County, Pa.

Sources say East Butler, Herman, Lick Hill, Prospect, Saxonburg, Chicora, South Butler, Sugarcreek, and North Washington firefighters were called to the farm owned by 61-year-old Steve Snyder III.

Snyder, his wife, Debbie, and their six children reside on the farm; they have owned the farm since 1959.

According to sources, one of two barns on the property caught fire, but with the wind blowing in gusts, the fire quickly spread to the second barn a short distance away.

Sixty swine were housed in the first barn, but only one of the sixty were able to escape.

Sources say feed and diesel fuel were stored in the first barn which hampered the firefighters efforts.

The Snyders turned from dairy to pork farming after wholesale milk prices plummeted; they still maintain a small herd of cattle on the farm, though. The cattle were outside at the time; none were harmed.

The cause of the fire is unknown.
