Fifteen Dead, 272 Injured in Holiday Crashes

HARRISBURG, Pa.- Fifteen people were killed and 272 others were injured in the 1,013 crashes investigated by the Pennsylvania State Police during the five-day Thanksgiving holiday driving period.

The official holiday driving period was Nov. 25 through Nov. 29. During that time, troopers cited 1,296 individuals for not wearing seat belts and issued citations to 318 motorists for not securing children in safety seats.

Troopers also issued 14,985 speeding citations and arrested 558 operators for driving under the influence. Of the 1,013 crashes investigated by State Police, 91 were alcohol related, seven of which were fatal.

During last year’s holiday driving period, seven people died and 273 others were injured in 1,457 crashes to which state troopers responded.

The statistics cover only those crashes investigated by state police and do not include statistics on incidents to which other law enforcement agencies in Pennsylvania responded.
